Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip - Angles - Album

Me, listening to hip hop? Whatever next?

Actually, it’s not totally unheard of and I’ve always got time for a UK Hip Hop artist or two. Young Scroobius Pip and his friend Dan Le Sac, both hailing from deepest darkest Essex are no exception to this rule.

I’m quite enjoying Angles. Lyrically I would say it is possibly even a masterpiece, dealing with pretty deep subject matter in a very easy to digest manner. Hip Hop has struggled to keep it real for a few years now but this album brings it right back to ground level again with what sounds like real personal experiences and woes. It’s not all bad news and depression though. There are some parts of this album that are just lighthearted and fun.

The production, I would say is a little variable. It swings violently between completely uninspired and absolute genius. Fortunately the lyrics manage to pull the recording through the bad stuff and you still end up with a very good record.

If you like UK Hip Hop, this album should be a part of your collection and for any aspiring artists it should be a point of reference.

Fo Real.

The Chap - Mega Breakfast - Album

So, a new album from The Chap. What should I expect? Well, I would expect some classical instrument abuse, offbeat rhythms, melodies that shouldn’t work and a general air of arty-fartyness. Oddly enough, it’s exactly that but in a good way of course.

It’s always (fun and) interesting to hear new studio stuff from The Chap and it neve ceases to amaze me how different the material “feels” from when they perform it in a live set. As is standard form, the studio recorded Chap and the live Chap continue to be two completely different bands with Mega Breakfast giving you a more refined, cleaner view of the slightly off centre world of The Chap. It’s not album of the year material but it is pretty good. Definitely a grower.

I have to say though, The Chap are very much a real band that clearly don’t like being confined to the studio. Get yourself to one of their live gigs as soon as you can and I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

Pendulum - In Silico - Album

If you’re expecting a replay of “Hold Your Colour” you will be disappointed, so don’t! In fact, you’re probably better off forgetting about it for now.

To sum it up, In Silico rocks… As in guitars, vocals and real drums rocks. It’s not the traditional DnB album you might expect based on previous form, what you actually get is a nicely evolved hybrid of breakbeat, DnB and good old fashioned rock music. Throw in a few twisted leads that hark back to old black and white spy movies, some modern day power pop style vocals and there you have the “new” sound of Pendulum. Nothing wrong with the old sound at all though, I just like the way it has evolved.

Production on this release is absolutely superb. It’s loud and in your face but dynamic where it’s needed. Considering the extreme usage of the full audible spectrum, you can still hear every single part of the recording at all times. You can tell a great deal of care has been taken over this.

I have to admit, it took me a couple of listens to “get it” but now I do, I’m loving it and I really, really want to go and see them live.

I actually bought the Bonus Tracks Version from iTunes and am very glad I did. Bolted on the end of the album are two absolutely brutal remixes of Propane Nightmares (and one not so brutal) that are a must listen!
